Intramural Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences Program

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Can I participate in iCURE and continue to conduct research at my current institution?

No, iCURE supports mentored research experiences within the NCI research campuses in Bethesda, Rockville, and Frederick, Maryland.

  2. When do iCURE research experiences begin?

The target start date for iCURE cohorts is September 1, but can be flexible within reason. Start dates cannot exceed December 31 of the respective start year. For example, if the target start date is September 1, 2026 then the latest start date allowable is December 31, 2026.

  3. What if I need more time to complete my research than the period of support iCURE offers?

iCURE PIs may choose to continue to support your research past the period of support iCURE provides. You will still be welcome to engage with iCURE staff and participate in iCURE activities.

  4. I have a work permit/student visa. Am I eligible for an iCURE award?

iCURE scholars must be a citizen or non-citizen national of the United States or an individual who has been lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States.

  5. Do iCURE scholars get paid?

Yes, we follow the published NIH standard practices for setting the level of stipends. Please see the NIH OITE website for the most up-to-date information.

  6. Do I need to identify a Principal Investigator (PI) with whom I wish to work with?

No, you do not need to identify or secure a Principal Investigator (PI) or research group prior to applying to the iCURE program. The program is designed to facilitate matches between applicants and potential mentors/PIs. However, if you have a specific interest in a particular PI or project, please inform us. A list of available PIs and their projects will be provided to selected applicants, who will then have the opportunity to indicate their preferences for interviews. Formal acceptance into the program requires mutual agreement between the applicant and the NCI scientist.

  7. Can I interview with more than one potential PI?

Yes, you may be offered interviews with more than one PI. Additionally, more than one PI may express interest in you joining their research group. You may choose to accept or decline the offers you receive.

  8. What if the research group I am interested in isn't listed on the iCURE provided list?

Please let us know the research group you are interested in, and we will follow up. Any NCI investigator within CCR, CGH, DCCPS, and DCEG can serve as an iCURE PI.

  9. Do I need to submit written reference letters with my application?

No, you do not need to provide reference letters, only the information required in the application. We will contact references directly for recommendations.

  10. Who should write my reference letters?

Letters of reference should be written by individuals in the scientific/academic community who have knowledge of your scientific accomplishments, motivation, skills, and potential for future leadership in your field. They should be written by individuals who have knowledge of your academic and career interests, abilities, and accomplishments, as well as your preparedness for scientific research. These individuals may include current or previous employers, professors, colleagues, and collaborators. We recommend choosing someone who knows you well and can speak specifically on your behalf. Research mentors are a good starting point. Previous or current professors or employers can also provide letters.

Reference letters from peers are discouraged.

You must request current and original letters of reference from three individuals. The requests to your referees will be facilitated through your application account.

  11. Do I need to submit an official transcript by the application deadline?

No, you may provide an unofficial transcript when you apply. However, you may be asked to provide an official transcript later.

  12. Are iCURE scholars required to be based on-site at the NCI in Maryland?

Yes. NIH trainees and fellows may not be appointed to work remotely; however, you may be able to work from home (telework) on a limited basis.

  13. Will my application be reviewed for opportunities at other NIH Institutes or Centers?

No, the iCURE program is for the National Cancer Institute only. If you are interested in other NIH institutes and are a postbaccalaureate applicant, please submit an application to the NIH Postbac Program. If you are interested in other NIH institutes and are a graduate student applicant, please see information on NIH Graduate Partnerships Programs for more options. If you are interested in other NIH institutes and are a postdoctoral applicant, review the information on the NIH OITE website for how to apply to specific mentors.
